Colt keeps the

commpetition at

bay.

Gator Bay, by Gators N Bears out of Boston Lass, won the Maiden Special Weight at Penn National, by owning the lead from start to finish. The Gators N Bears colt broke sharply out of the gate and was the quickest to begin.  The quarter went in 22 flat.

Setting the pace, Gator Bay kept his lead in the clear by 2 1/2 lengths at the quarter pole, to hold and command the win.

Jim's Prospect wins the $70,000 Wide

Country at Laurel Park

- James McCue

St Averil Filly wins the Wide Country Stakes March 6, 2010 .

Jim's Prospect, a three-year-old filly by St Averil, earned her first black type victory by beating a quality field of sophomore fillies in the $70,000 Wide Country Stakes at Laurel Park.  The St Averil filly broke out of the eight hole in the seven furlong event and was parked four wide around the turn as she commenced her rally from last to first.  The John B. Secor trainee used the whole stretch to mow down New York shipper and Kiaran McLaughlin charge That's How I Roll and favorite Gator Prowl who completed the trifecta in that order.

The Baltimore Sun:

"Jim's Prospect won the $70,000 Wide Country Stakes at Laurel Park on Saturday,
beating out seven other 3-year-old fillies.   Jim's Prospect had finished second to post-time favorite Gator Prowl in their previous two meetings but got the better of her rival Saturday.
Jim's Prospect, the daughter of St Averil, finishing the seven-furlong race in 1 minute, 24.67 seconds over the fast main track. " < Anonymous 2010, Sports Digest>

Jim's Prospect is now 2-for-7 lifetime with six in-the-money finishes (three of which were in stakes) for earnings of $94,560.
St Averil is the first 2nd crop Md sire to produce a stakes winner.

Maryland Stallion Station makes its mark on the Maryland Million

The 24th running of the Maryland Million Races felt the force of the Maryland Stallion Station. The Maryland Million Nursery was dominated by the '07 Rock Slide colt, Toboggan Slide. Toboggan Slide advanced three wide taking command on the turn and drew off mid-stretch to win by 4 ½ lengths. The time 1:09.22, was less than one second off the time of the Maryland Million Sprint, 1:08.68, and was the fastest 6 furlong run by a juvenile in the history of the Maryland Million Nursery Race by almost two seconds. Toboggan Slide was very impressive for his third win in as many starts, two of them in stakes company. “We are looking toward the Champagne G1 to be his next start,” said trainer, Daniel T. O'Ryan. Congratulations to breeder, James B. Steele, and owner/trainer, Daniel T O'Ryan.

Saxet Heights, a '05 Outflanker filly, ran a strong second in the Maryland Million Distaff. Congratulations to owner/breeder, Carey Miller, and trainer, Jeff Runco, for another good effort by this very consistent daughter of Outflanker.

Jim's Prospect, a '07 filly by St Averil, made her racing debut with a respectable third in the Maryland Million Lassie, ahead of the odds on favorite. We expect to see this filly in the winner’s circle very soon.

Come out to the Fasig Tipton Eastern Fall Yearling Sale October 5th & 6th. The sale will be a great opportunity to purchase an offspring of one of these exciting sires, including a full sister to stakes winner, Toboggan Slide.

Thank you to all the supporters that came out for the races!

Fantasticat's First Crop Continue to Excel

Fantasticat's offspring from his first crop keep on winning. He now has three runners and three winners as Doc Barker won a maiden race last week. Looking beyond the Maryland Million, the Maryland Stallion Station will also be well represented at the Fasig Tipton Eastern Fall Yearling Sale October 5 & 6th.

Big Win by Big Gulp!

Another winner by Gators N Bears

Oh My!

Big Gulp, a bay filly by Gators N Bears out of Repast, by Formal Dinner won a maiden race on the dirt at Charles Town. The filly broke sharp, cleared early and kept clear at the eight and won by keeping to task. She could not be caught! GIving Gators N Bears another winner on the dirt. The Filly was breed by Mr. Mrs Charles McGinnes and foaled in Maryland. Our congratulation go out to the McGinnes and owners Figgins, III, C.A. and Ollie L.

Gators N Bears is a multiple graded stakes-winning son of Stormy Atlantic, who earned $804,393 and comes from the family of millionaire FRIENDLY LOVER. He stands for $5,000 live foal at Bonita Farm in Darlington, MD, under the Maryland Stallion Station banner.

For additional information, contact Don Litz at 443-253-2856.

Heavens to Murgatroid!

Two starters.  Two demanding wins.

Fantastic?

Nope Fantasticat.

Fantasticat has started his stud career off in fine fashion with two runners and two winners. The most recent winner, Heavenstmurgatroid, out of the Norquestor mare, Sally Q, won a maiden race on the turf at Colonial Downs. The bay colt broke alertly and immediately went to the lead and led the entire way winning by two lengths. This beautiful moving colt was bred in Maryland by David DiPietro and Herbert A. May III. Congratulations to the winning owner, Warwick Stable, and the winning trainer, Ferris Allen.

As you begin to think about the 2010 breeding season, Fantasticat should be high on your list of prospects. He was a winner on the dirt and the turf and his first two runners, Heavenstmurgatroid and Fantasyland, won on the turf and the dirt. He is a sire for all surfaces. Call Don Litz at 443-253-2856 or go to www.marylandstallions.com for more information.

FANTASTICAT is a Grade 2-winning son of STORM CAT from the family of millionaire STEPHAN'S ODYSSEY, champion TOSMAH, and sires HALO and CANNONADE. He stands for Maryland Stallion Station commanding a $4,500 live foal at Bonita Farm .

Outflanker and Gators N Bears
Continue Their Winning Ways

This past weekend was another successful one for the daughters of Outflanker and Gators N Bears. Marina Ballerina led the entire way to win the U Can Do It Handicap at Calder Race Course for her second stakes win in the last month. She has two stakes wins and a placing in three starts in 2009. Congratulations to her owners/breeders, Robert and Linda Pastor. We look forward to more success for this very speedy daughter of Outflanker.

Gators N Bears has had two starts by his offspring, both by Ally Bear and both wins. The win on Friday evening in an allowance race at Colonial Downs was on the turf giving her a win on both the dirt and the turf. This filly runs for Janet Wayson having been selected by her late husband Morgan at auction shortly before his death. Congratulations to Mrs. Wayson and trainer, Jerry Robb, as well as breeders, Michael DeSaye and Glenn and Becky Brok, who raised the filly.

With the breeding season drawing to a close, it is still possible to breed to Outflanker and Gators N Bears. Please call Don Litz at 410-771-4894 or 443-253-2856. An open mare could be your missed opportunity.

Fantasticat & Gators N Bears

FIRST STARTER
FIRST RACE
FIRST WIN

2-Year-Old Maiden Special winners
by RESOUNDING margins!

Maryland Stallion Station is thrilled to announce two of their freshman stallions, FANTASTICAT and GATORS N BEARS, each just had their very first starter win first time out within less than a 24-hour time span of each other.

On May 2, in an open Maiden Special Weight race at Penn National, Gators N Bears' PA-Bred daughter Ally Bear, moved clear by two lengths at the quarter pole and won by an incredible 9 3/4 lengths margin. On May 22, in the first race at Pimlico, Fantasticat's daughter Fantasyland won a maiden special weight by a commanding 4 3/4 lengths. Both fillies were first time starters and the first starter for each of their sires, from their first crops.

FANTASTICAT is a Grade 2-winning son of STORM CAT from the family of millionaire STEPHAN'S ODYSSEY, champion TOSMAH, and sires HALO and CANNONADE. He stands for Maryland Stallion Station commanding a $4,500 live foal at Bonita Farm as well.

LET'S HEAR IT FOR MAY FOALS!

Rob Whiteley
As a populist horseman, it makes me smile when a relatively obscure horse comes out of the hinterlands and beats up on a bunch of fashionably bred horses who are sired by generally over-priced, over-hyped, and over-bred stallions. And it turns my smile into a broad grin to observe that Mine That Bird is a mid-May foal .

To be fair, the valiant runner-up, Pioneerof the Nile, is regally bred and fully deserving of his cost of production. His bloodlines and hefty stud fee came through in a brave display of talent and determination, and those who played him unsuccessfully in the exotics only have themselves to blame for not taking home a big piece of the track. Like the item we look past in the front of the refrigerator, it was right there to see. Pioneerof the Nile is also a May foal, and if you had played a May foal exacta, you would have received $2,074.80 for a $2 exacta box. (Ed. Note: A $2 exacta box with all of the May foals in the Derby would=ve cost $40. Atomic Rain (Smart Strike), Regal Ransom (Distorted Humor) and third-place finisher Musket Man (Yonaguska) are all May foals as well. A $1 triple box on the quintet would=ve set you back just $60, and returned $20,750.30)

In light of the continuous racing success achieved by May foals year after year, I am at a loss to rationally understand how that success fails to translate into the sales scene where May foals, as a group, bring approximately 35 percent less than their counterparts.  For some in-grained reason, rooted in hearsay and perpetuated by the typical word of mouth momentum that spreads other horse industry falsehoods and myths, May foals get a bad rap at the sales, and are often discounted accordingly in the ring. This is such nonsense. The stigma on May foals that floats around on the winds of ignorance has no basis in fact.

It can even be persuasively argued that May foals actually have a slight advantage over other foals, as May foals are born according to a horse's innate and
natural spring-time predispositions, and with the most favorable environmental conditions.

Savvy buyers who keep up with the details of racing know that May foals, as a group, race as successfully as foals born in other months, and better than foals
born in January. And the sharpest horsemen and pinhookers know that a few days or even weeks generally make little difference in a horse's early development.

The most important factors in a horse's ability to perform early involve genetically based precocity, balance, athleticism, and mental maturity, not date of birth.

Each horse has its own genetically wound clock, and horses have wide-ranging differences in the rate that they develop, no matter which month they might be born in. Like foals born in January or February or any month, some May foals may be forward enough to zip along at two-year-old sales, while others may not be mature enough to race effectively until the middle of their three-year-old years, or later. Horses, like humans and other mammals, follow their own genetic blueprint.

When it is their time to perform, however, May foals truly hold their own, even as two-year-olds. Except for the month of January, the fewest number of foals are born in May, yet they account for 10 percent of Breeders' Cup Juvenile colt and filly champions. Furthermore, as May foals mature, their success rate in certain top level venues can be jawdropping. May foals have won a stunning 50 percent of the last 10 Breeders= Cup Distaffs (including, Azeri, Round Pond, Spain, and Escena). And May foals have won over 25 percent of all Breeders= Cup Mile races.
Despite the impressive frequency with which May foals find the winner=s circle in big races, however, a May foal may not win the Preakness this year. Instead,
a magnificent January foal named Rachel Alexandra may be brilliant enough to outrun the boys, no matter when they were born (if she can adjust to a new groom, a new trainer, and new routines). But the Belmont, please take note, is entirely a different matter because of the extraordinary potency of the May foal factor.

The May foal factor is the strongest available predictor of Belmont success--far stronger than the most sophisticated figs or Beyer numbers--because May foals, incredibly, have won nearly 40 percent of the last 15 runnings of the Belmont (including, Afleet Alex,
Lemon Drop Kid, Thunder Gulch, Touch Gold, Victory Gallop, and Mine That Bird=s own daddy, Birdstone). Therefore, given the historical dominance by May foals in this mile-and-a-half event, and given the Bird's paternal family connection and the probable presence of steadfast Pioneerof the Nile, we could even be looking at the same May foal quinella we witnessed in the Derby. In any event, it is time we give May foals the
respect they deserve, at the sales and on the track.

At Calder Race Course on April 25th, Annabill won The Emergency Nurse S. Stakes by drawing clear and holding on. Annabill, the 6 year old mare by Outflanker out of A. J.'s Hot Shot, by Explodent ,  proves that Outflanker's offspring start early and stay sound. He produces a durable and talented race horse.  Congratulations to her breeder Peter Fuller, owner N.T.S. RACING TOWARD THE 2009 MARYLAND MILLION

Last week was one of contrasts. Monday through Wednesday spent at Timonium watching yearlings being given away and bought back at the Eastern Fall Yearling Sale. The stock market was tanking, the House had failed to pass the bail out bill and credit markets were very tight. Saturday, under clear blue skies and bright sun progeny of Maryland Stallion Station stallions won 3 stakes races on Maryland Million Day at Laurel Park. What a difference a few days can make.

In the fifth race Juke Joint by Jazz Club continued his unbeaten streak by winning the Maryland Million Nursery by four and one half lengths as the favorite. This flashy chestnut colt was bred by MSS co-founder David DiPietro and owned by R. Legacy Racing, Inc. and Lonnie Stokes. Look for a half sister to this colt by Outflanker in the 2010 Maryland Million.

The good fortune continued in the sixth race when three year old filly, Kosmo’s Buddy bumped at the start closed four wide and beat the boys in the Turf Sprint by a nose. This filly by Outflanker was bred by Arnold Smolen and is owned by Arnold and his son Adam. A great day of father and son bonding. This filly was foaled at Shamrock Farms in Woodbine. Kosmo’s dam Vaulted will have two Bowman’s Band half sisters and a Rock Slide half bother in future Maryland Million races.

The eighth race the Maryland Million Lassie for two year old fillies was won by Miss Charm City by former MSS stallion Bowman’s Band. This undefeated chestnut filly was bred in Maryland by James Glenn and is trained by Carlos Garcia. James Glenn came to the Stallion Station to look at Bowman for his mare Pam’ssummerwind and was excited by the prospect of that mating. It was bittersweet that neither James Glenn or Bowman’s Band would live to see this special filly run. Getting an early start in preparing for the 2009 Maryland Million is this filly’s half sister by MSS sire St Averil.

In the ninth race Saxet Heights by Outflanker rallied wide to finish second in the Maryland Million Oaks. This was her first start at over seven furlongs and her first start not at her home track. This was a strong effort for the daughter of Holiday Ball bred by Carey Miller. She will have a half brother by MSS stallion Cherokee’s Boy eligible to run in the 2010 Maryland Million.

The days racing at Laurel was positive for the stallions from Maryland Stallion Station in the second year of eligibility for most of our stallions. We can only have positive thoughts about 2009 when the offspring of Fantasticat, Gators N Bears and St Averil will be eligible for the first time to the Maryland Million. Stallions chosen on the basis of pedigree, race record and conformation produce stakes winners.

All breeders do not forget to nominate your weanlings to the Maryland Million, it is only $250 if done by December 31st of their year of birth.

Another MSS Exacta In Gin Talking Stakes At Laurel

9/8/08 - Saturday September 9, 2008 with the stake off the turf at Laurel and the region in the grips of Tropical Storm Hanna, Maryland Stallion Station Stallions captured the exacta in the Gin Talking Stakes. Miss Charm City, a chestnut daughter of BOWMAN’S BAND owned by the Estate of James Glenn and trained by Carlos Garcia took the lead at the 3/8th pole and powered off to a 6 ¾ length win. Letmeaskuaquestion by OUTFLANKER finished second to complete the exacta which paid $17.20. Look for both of these fillies in the October 4th Maryland Million Lassie.

This is just another example of how the criteria used by the team at Maryland Stallion Station to select stallions can help to give you an edge in this very competitive environment. Don Litz looks at potential sires based on pedigree, race record and conformation. BOWMAN’S BAND had all three in quantity and was the sire of four crops two at Maryland Stallion Station and two at Lane’s End Farm in Kentucky before his untimely death this summer following colic surgery.

OUTFLANKER an established sire at the time of his purchase was selected for his pedigree, conformation and the ability to move up his mares. He is a perfect fit with the higher quality mares available in the Mid Atlantic region. He has not disappointed firmly establishing himself as the number 2 sire behind Not For Love and as the leader in stakes wins in the region. OUTFLANKER’S daughter Marina Ballerina was second in the Grade 3 Seaway Stake on Saturday at Woodbine.

Now is the time to purchase or breed your own son or daughter of the stallions chosen using strict criteria to help maximize the success of our clients. The fireworks will be even brighter when the first crops of FANTASTICAT, GATORS N BEARS and ST AVERIL race in 2009. Look for many son and daughters of BOWMAN’S BAND, FANTASTICAT, GATORS N BEARS, OUTFLANKER, ROCK SLIDE, SEEKING DAYLIGHT and ST AVERIL in the Fasig Tipton Eastern Fall Yearling Sale September 29 – October 1. Maryland Stallion Station Trifecta in Rachel’s Turn Stake

6/23/08 - On a pretty summer night in Charles Town, West Virginia MSS sires Outflanker, Seeking Daylight and Rock Slide accounted for the trifecta in the $50,000 Rachel’s Turn Stakes. Letmeaskuaquestion by Outflanker out of Misty Diablo bred in Maryland by David DiPietro and Louis Carrico won the race by 1 ¾ lengths with Broad But Nice and You Rock a nose apart and 9 ¼ lengths clear of the rest of the field. This is just more proof that breeding to Maryland Stallion Station sires is an asset in any state bred/accredited program. This stake was restricted to accredited West Virginia Breds.

These fillies are eligible to take advantage of up to three programs each. Letmeaskuaquestion is Maryland bred, Maryland Million nominated and West Virginia accredited. You Rock is all of the above except Maryland bred. Broad But Nice is Pennsylvania bred and West Virginia accredited. By nominating your foals to as many of these programs as they are eligible helps to increase your possible rate of return. The Maryland Million initial nomination fee of $250 nominates your foal for their entire career and is due by December 31st of their year of birth. All MSS stallions are Maryland Million nominated and you can get the required nominating forms at www.marylandthoroughbred.com or by calling our office 410-833-1299.

Gators N Bears – Yearling Sells for $55K

8/12/08 - Gators N Bears first crop of yearlings will be in the sales ring in 2008. Our optimism about the reception for these yearlings got a boost when the first colt went through the ring this past week-end. The strapping bay colt out of Uno Dos sold for $55,000 at the Fasig Tipton Saratoga New York Bred Preferred Yearling Sale. 11 times the advertised stud fee is a good way to start the season.

Gators N Bears was a durable and fast sprinter who never failed to show up in the afternoon. His foals are big strong athletic individuals, who look like they will be racehorses. We are very excited about the Gators yearlings that we will be selling at the Eastern Fall Yearling sale.

Major Stakes Wins Cap Huge Year for Outflanker

Outflanker finished 2007 (as he did in 2006) in style with two major stakes wins within 10 minutes of one another on December 31st. Two-yr old Apple Special captured the Maryland Juvenile Championship in commanding fashion while Bayou's Lassie won a hard fought battle against top fillies and mares in the Grade 3 Stage Door Betty at Calder.

Outflanker finished 2007 as the number 2 sire in Maryland with over $3.5mm in earnings, trailing only Not for Love (at 6+ times the stud fee). More importantly, his solid first Maryland sired crop led to his being the leading sire of 2 yr old winners in the MID ATLANTIC REGION. Outflanker had 8 stakes winners in 2007, three of them graded as well as two 2 year old stakes winners and two other stakes placed juveniles.
